Most players instinctively check the kill column first, yet assists often carry a more reliable signal of macro-level contribution. A single kill can be a lucky last-hit, but an assist requires participation in the skirmish, rotation, or team fight that created the kill window. In games where the final KDA line reads 5/2/15 versus 15/3/4, the player with fewer kills but more assists frequently has the higher actual impact: they enabled map pressure, secured vision, and forced enemy cooldowns. Statistical models across MOBA titles consistently show that assist share correlates with objective control—dragons, towers, and barons—more strongly than kill share alone. This is because assists reflect rotation speed and team fighting presence. A player roaming to bottom lane for a 2v1 dive gets an assist even if the tower or champion is finished by a teammate; that assist represents time and positioning investment that a passive laner will never log. When evaluating win contribution, feeding equal weight to assists as to kills makes the picture significantly more accurate.

A team with a 30-15 aggregate KDA can lose to a team with 18-20 if the latter secures three infernal dragons, a Baron, and a faster sieging comp. Statistical analysis from professional leagues shows that first tower, first dragon, and Baron attempts each add more to win probability than a single additional team kill. Furthermore, KDA does not capture missed damage, crowd control landed, or vision score. A player can have a 0/0/0 line but single-handedly win a game by zoning enemies from an objective. Thus, while KDA remains a useful quick metric for player performance, it should be consumed alongside objective participation, gold per minute, damage share, and vision score.
